In William Shakespeare's drama, deception is an essential element. It can be either destructive or benign, and it is found in many dramas, regardless of whether it's a tragedy, history, or comedy. Deception becomes the very foundation of Shakespeare's "Hamlet".
Shakespeare's use of deception is seen most clearly in Hamlet's actions. In fact, even Hamlet's madness is an act of deception. It is concocted in order to draw attention away from his suspicious actions while he is trying to find ways to prove that Claudius was the one who killed his father. Hamlet confessed this deception to his closest friend Horatio when he said, "As I, perchance, hereafter shall think meet… to put an antic disposition on..." Hamlet continues his deception when he stages "The Murder of Gonzago" to try to catch Claudius in his guilt. Hamlet is also deceitful when he meets with his mother in her closet. He tries to appear threatening and intending harm, but he has no intention of being physically......
