In 1973, the U.S. government imposed a 55 mph maximum speed limit on highways across the country, which lasted twenty years until Congress to come to its senses, finally repealed the law in 1995 (Moore). Congress took many factors into account when determining the maximum speed limit, primarily the notion that slower driving reduces gas consumption. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that if drivers reduce their speed by only 5 mph, they would use around 7% less gas (LA Times). Congress also concluded that a lower speed limit would reduce the injury and fatality rates from accidents across the country. Slowing down the flow of traffic sounds like a win-win for some, however it is hardly the best solution for the problems we face on the road or in our gas tanks. The fuel economy of today’s automobiles is higher than ever before, and a reduction of the speed limit is an unsuitable solution.
