The super chain started, in 1963, as a few tiny variety stores, created by Sam and Bud Walton in Rogers, Arkansas. The start-up was mainly funded by Sam and his wife Helen. After the success with the first few stores, more money was borrowed and more stores were built, creating the Wal-Mart empire we know today.
