D-Day

In November, 1943, Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt met together in Teheran, Iran, to discuss a military plan and post-war Europe. Ever since the Soviet Union had entered the war, Stalin had been pushing the Allies to open up a second front in Europe. Churchill and Roosevelt argued that any attempt to land troops in Western Europe would result in major fatalities. Stalin had feared that without a second front, Germany would defeat them (“D-Day”, Spartacus.)
Franklin D. Roosevelt came up with an invasion plan called Operation Overlord, which was code name for the invasion of Normandy on D-Day (Vaughn, D-Day.) Operation Overlord involved over 200,000 men and 6,939 ships (Holmes, 6.) Roosevelt chose Montgomery as the ground forces commander for the D-Day attacks. Roosevelt’s first choice for commander was General Howard Alexander, but Churchill needed Alexander to remain in Italy (Barratt, Military.)
