Rebellion
Ivan Karamazov possesses a very unique understanding of religion and love. Ivan, a strong believer in his religion, states that all religions are based upon a desire. The desire is that of a person finding out what they lived for, what that person did in his or her life to be beneficial or detrimental to those of a future generation. Ivan says, “Is it possible that I’ve suffered so that I, together with my evil deeds and suffering, should be manure for someone’s future harmony?” (The Brothers Karamazov 244) Basically, Ivan is asking if what he did during his lifetime laid the groundwork or could be an example for future generations to be aware of the mistakes and consequences he went through. He asked if he was a theoretical test dummy for future beings not to make the same mistakes he made and to live in harmony. These mistakes are the sins that the “grown-ups” have endured over the years due to their self-created evil. Ivan says that the devil does......
