When most people think of myths, they think of traditional Greek stories: demi-god heroes, immortal relations with mortals, and fictional beasts. The fact, however, is that myths are far more common than they are often perceived to be. While many may not realize it, they are even quite prevalent in modern popular culture. One of the largest examples of this deals with movies. Many of our generation’s great films revolve around the idea of the myth. Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter are prime examples. Another example, which almost directly follows Joseph Campbell’s ideas of what a myth “should” be is The Matrix.
This story revolves around the idea that there is a “real” world and a “fake” world, the latter known as the matrix. Going with Campbell’s ideas, this film occurs in a different time, though not in a far away area, but rather on Earth.
