The internet has curbed the traditional news media’s monopoly on the broadcasting of mass-information about current events. Individuals can create media that mass audiences can see and hear, without filter. Dr. Mark Dueze has a joint appointment at IU's Department of Telecommunications, and is Professor in Journalism and New Media at Leiden University in the Netherlands. He says anything that falls into the dominant liberal-progressive definition of journalism is on par with the mainstream media, and describes that definition as “to provide citizens with the information they need to be free and self governing (Dueze 211).” By Dueze’s definition, anything conveying information, from blogs to video, could be considered journalism. Nicholas Burbules thinks the lack of gatekeepers on the internet could be dangerous.
