1968 was a momentous year in world history. In fact, it was the pivotal year of a pivotal decade during a pivotal century in which many historical trends and factors merged to accelerate the rate of change and propel our society into a new kind of world. During the decade of the sixties, the concurrence of the civil rights movement, international disapproval of America’s involvement in Vietnam, and student alienation in both hemispheres, combined with technological advances in television. It all came to a head on February 27, 1968, when Walter Cronkite aired his watershed Report From Vietnam. Cronkite, a respected and admired conservative journalist risked editorializing his view that peace through negotiation was the only honorable way to end the Vietnam conflict. Television news reporting had come of age, and the relationship between the media and world events would alter society forever.
