Launched in 1959, the original Mini proved to be one of the most enduring fashion and motoring icons of the twentieth century, with production of the car finally coming to a halt in 1998. The announcement in 2000 by BMW, owner of the Mini brand that it was to invest £200 million in the development and launch of the new Mini was, therefore, received with enormous enthusiasm both by the press and the public.
The European car market is intensively competitive, with one of the most crowded parts of this being the so-called ‘supermini’ segment. With the sector being dominated by some of the mass-market players, such as Renault, Volkswagen, Nissan, Peugeot, Ford and Toyota, but also featuring some of the luxury brands such as the Mercedes A-Class and the Audi A2, competition for the Mini was expected to be particularly tough from the outset.
