The Anglo-Saxons are a collection of different Germanic tribes from Angeln, in

the Northwest coast of Germany. They achieved dominance in southern Britain from the

mid 5th century. My ancestry goes back to this era in western Europe. By the 9th century

the Anglo-Saxons completely came together into a single group of people. Creating a

base for the modern day English country, people and culture.

Anglo-Saxon art covers the period from the time of King Alfred(871-899), with

the revival of English culture after the end of the Viking raids, to the early 12th century.

The Romanesque art was just coming into style at the time. The Anglo-Saxon art is

known today for its illuminated manuscripts. Which is basically when text is

supplemented by the addition of decoration or illustration. It is a handwritten book that

has been decorated with gold or silver, brilliant colors, or elaborate designs or miniature
