Mr. Asimov was not satisfied with the scientific inaccuracies and other “hollywoodizations” that had to take place in the story line of Fantastic Voyage. This irked him so much over the years that he finally decided to re-do the entire story, set it in a future that looked like it would be ruled by detente and generally try and make miniaturization seem feasible.
In redoing the story line, Mr. Asimov takes the clean and direct story and muddles it with all sorts of interpersonal conflicts, a kidnapping, and some very improbable science. The miniaturization is not the worse of it as Mr. Asimov drags in the concept of “thought areas” within the brain and telepathy. Even by the time of 1986 the concept of cognitive (“skeptic”) nodes had been pretty well demolished by CAT scans and MR scans and the examination of how the brain actually works when it is thinking.
