Odysseus, Pain For Recognition

On the first page of the Odyssey, before the reader even meets Odysseus, he is introduced as “the man of may twists and turns” (pg.77, B1). In the Odyssey, the two main themes are pain and recognition and Odysseus’ cunning and crafty nature often leads to both.
When Odysseus encounters the Cyclops after entering his house and eating his food, he immediately has a plan. When the Cyclops asks Odysseus where his ship is, Odysseus (knowing that the Cyclops will want to smash his ship) replies “My ship? Poseidon, god of earthquake smashed my ship, he drove it against the rocks at your island’s far cape,” (pg.220, B9). Odysseus then sees an opportunity to get the Cyclops drunk, telling him “Nobody-that’s my name. Nobody-so my mother and father call me, all my friends” another part of hi larger plan (pg.223, B9).
