Copyright protection has been upheld by American courts since its inclusion in the Constitution. Today the Internet allows its users a resource and publishing medium unlike any other, which has placed additional pressures on copyright protection. This paper will look at the history of copyright legislation in the United States, the issues it faces involving user-generated content, and the future concerns that will factor into modern copyright protection.
Federal copyright protection is derived from English laws that were created in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Similar protection was eventually included in the U.S. Constitution under the power of Congress:
