“La Costra Nostra” the American Mafia
Today’s American Mafia, known as “La Costra Nostra” (LCN) has its roots in Italy. The American branch of the mafia is believed to have begun in 1893 when Don Vito Cascio Ferro fled to New York after the murder of Emmanuelle Notarbartolo, a banker in Sicily. More Mafioso fled to America when Mussolini, in the 1920’s attempted to exterminate the Mafia in Sicily. There were thousands of Italian and Sicilian gunmen and thieves saw lucrative opportunities in the United States, and a new life. The main idea of the mafia is to make money whether it is illegal or legit it does not matter. To make money they do money laundering to turn their dirty money into clean money.
