The Great Penitentiary Rivalry started a debate over the most effective way to run the prisons of the US. Pennsylvania thought it would be a good idea to have the inmates work separate from each other and also to work quite. They took the concept of them being alone and not saying a word to a whole new level. They were not allowed to look at each other or talk to each other. They were in fear that the inmates would corrupt the other people there and for that that they all slept alone, ate alone, and they worked alone. When they did get a visit from someone it was for a religious reason. Then when New York started its system it was more on obedience and not silence and the inmates being alone. One of the prisons that opened in Auburn acted pretty much like the one at Walnut Street. It had solitary confinements which later lead to many inmates getting sick, going crazy and killing themselves. It eventually became abandoned and was reopened 9 years later.
