Background Information/ Terms:
-Geography: Sudan is located in the northeastern corner of Africa and is bordered by Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Chad, Libya, and the Red Sea. Sudan is the largest country in Africa and the tenth largest country in the world by area, about one fourth the size of the United States.
-Government: Due to Sudan’s authoritarian republic, all effective political power is in the hands of the president, currently Omar al-Bashir, who assumed office after the military coup on June 30th, 1989 and was later elected president with a five-year term in 1996. In 1998 al-Bashir instated a new constitution and in 1999 he teamed with Parliament to make a law limiting political associations that opposed al-Bashir, his supporters and his sponsors. Omar al-Bashir is now considered to be the ‘Genocide’s Architect.’
