Montana 1984, By Larry Watson, depicts life in a small town and the secrets it can hold. The setting of the story is in a low population town in Montana and is told through the eyes of a twelve year old boy named David. David’s family is well known and well respected it the town. David’s world is dramatically altered when he hears a shocking secret about his uncle Frank. The novel tells about life in a small town, America post World War II, and the attitude and treatment of American Indians during the era that this story takes place.

Life in a small town is very different than normal cities. Everyone knows everyone and it is hard to keep a secret. There is also a family name that is especially respected and the townspeople admire those that carry it. In Montana 1948, that family name was the Hayden’s. David’s dad was the sheriff of the town, his uncle was a doctor and a decorated war hero, and his grandfather was the former sheriff and one the wealthier men in the area.......
