Fronto-Temporal Dementia
For the past few years, the medical profession has been exploring dementia illnesses in great depth. As a result, diagnosis has led to better understanding of different forms of the condition. Fronto-temporal dementia (FTD) is a relatively rare form of dementia, occurring in less than 10 per cent of all dementias and like Alzheimer's, it can take years to develop. It is a progressive neurodegenerative condition, which primarily affects the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. These portions of the brain shrink or atrophy leading to a progressive decline in an individuals mental abilities over time. This gradual onset of changes affects personality, behaviour, language and social conduct (Amano & Iseki, 1999). Typically, FTD begins in the fifth or sixth decade of life; however, there have reported cases with an onset as young as 21 years of age and as old as 85 years of age (Radin & Radin, 2003).
