Addiction is a word we hear much more in today’s world. What does it really mean? Addiction is a state of the body where it relies on a substance for normal functioning. When this substance is removed, it can cause withdrawal.
Addiction is used to describe a devotion, attachment and dedication. Addiction is used to describe a recurring compulsion by an individual to engage in some specific activity, despite harmful consequences to the individual's health, mental state or social life. (Stanton) The term is often reserved for drug or substance addictions but it is sometimes applied to other compulsions, such as problem gambling, and compulsive over eating.
The term addiction first came up around 1906 when opium was over used by people. Since then, people have become more dependent on substances.
