The Yellow Wallpaper
The story, “The Yellow Wallpaper” written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, makes tenacious statements about feminism and individuality by guiding the reader through the downward spiral of an oppressed woman’s psychopathy portrayed by the wallpaper in the room in which she is subjugated in while enduring an unknown illness. The story focuses on the interaction between the woman and the yellow wallpaper in her room which the author intends to symbolize female imprisonment in the domestic sphere. While the narrator in the story seems cognitively sound at the beginning of the story, the mental pressures put on her quickly cause her to deteriorate as she loses touch with the world around her and becomes inherently more aware of the inner reality of her life.
