World War I was a very destructive and long war. It involved trench warfare and stalemates. The First World War was a global military conflict which took place primarily in Europe from 1914 to 1918. It resulted in over 40 million causalities and 20 million deaths. This war involved all of the Great Powers, which it even more devastating. The causes of this world war were the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the many Alliances that were made between the Great Powers, militarism and imperialism.
There were numerous causes of the world war but the assassination of the archduke Franz Ferdinand was the main reason. It was because of this action that the world war started. On June 28, 1914 Gavrilo Princip shot the archduke. He was a Bosnian Serb citizen of Austria-Hungary and member of the Black Hand. This caused a number of alliances to be made which then caused a chain reaction of war declarations. Soon, most of Europe was in a state of open warfare.
