Geologic History of South America and Introduction
During the Early Jurassic, approximately 190 million years ago, South America was part of the supercontinent of Pangea. Free exchange of fauna was occurring between what is now the modern continents. In the late Jurassic, about 152 million years ago, Pangea separated into Gondwanaland and Laurasia. This separated South America from North America and the fauna of the two continents began to develop independently of each other. Sometime during the Cretaceous, at least 94 million years ago, South America separated from Gondwanaland and began a long period of isolation (fig. 1). For a little over a 90 million years, South America was effectively an inland continent. The only way for fauna to reach the continent was through island hopping or rafting. This allowed the fauna to develop independently from any other continent, creating a unique South American fauna.
