Pride & Prejudice, vol III, ch xi shows Jane Austens ability to manipulate and intersperse narrative voice and dialogue. She does this using a variety of methods and subtleties, which I will discuss now.
The passage begins with narration, and we can see within the first few words that the narrators voice is in the 3rd person, this is evidenced by the use of words such as ‘she’ and ‘his’, together with the fact that the narrator does not speak of him/herself, as would a 1st person narrator. We also learn that the narrator is omniscient, and can describe the feelings and thoughts of all the characters, of which Jane, the character most spoken of in the first paragraph is one. The start of the passage, by the use of this narrative voice gives the reader inside knowledge into Janes true feelings, drawing the reader in by letting them into a ‘secret’, which as we read further see that Jane is not willing to disclose to anyone.
