Literary Paragraph: “My Last Duchess” by Robert Browning
In the poem “My Last Duchess” by Robert Browning, Fra Pandolf’s painting of the Duke’s last duchess reveals the theme that those who are self-obsessed fail to see the inner qualities of those around them. As the Duke unveils the portrait of his last Duchess, he is eager to display the painting as a proud possession of his rather than a reminiscence of his last Duchess. He pompously informs the audience of the famous painter, “Fra Pandolf by design” and the striking validity of the painting “She stands there as if she were alive”. The Duke goes on to describe his last Duchess’ easily-impressed personality through what he observed of her. His arrogance hinders him in uncovering the true personality of the last Duchess and confines him to believe that she has mistreated her husband of such great importance.
