In the past, women in society had to follow what “he” said because “he knows best.” This is why John is considered better and more powerful than his wife, who is the narrator of “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Gilman. John and his wife lived in the 18th century, where this paternalistic society of the hierarchy of men took place. John’s wife, the narrator, was both imprisoned and oppressed by John. Slowly the oppression and imprisonment lead the narrator’s inability to stay sane.
