I. Description of the Media:
Radio commercials have been used for many years. Dating back to 1897, radio was primarily used for navigation of sea vessels, but some companies developed commercial applications and were beginning to sell stock. It was not until the early 1900’s that the radio industry became profitable, which began the era of government regulations. The networks had previously had amateurs who could use air time whenever and say pretty much what they wanted to. As you can imagine, radio broadcasting in this era was pretty scattered and unpredictable. Around 1920, the government decided to regulate the broadcasting airtime. Regulating the airwaves would maintain control and order, which would also organize the broadcasting information and require licensed operators of the transmission. In 1923, radio stations gained control and began selling time; they never looked back.
