• To some, addiction is best understood as a disease of the "spirit", a disconnection syndrome in which the person's relationship with "self" and a higher power is replaced with false promises of the chemical (Alter, 2001)

• As society evolved in the 20th and 21st century, the realms of science and spirituality are drifting further apart
• Physicians in particular are reflective of this gap as they are considered "enlightened" amd look down on the spiritual aspect
• The word spirit is derived from the Latin word spiritus, which on one level simply means "breath" (Mueller et al., 2001)
• In humankind, life, spiritus has become aware of itself as being apart from nature and we are all aware of our isolation from one another (Fromm, 1956)
• People who had difficulties achieving happiness ended up seeking it through substances
