1984 Presidential Race
This year the presidential race is shaping up to be a no brainer. The Republican nominee is incumbent President Ronald Reagan against Democratic Nominee, and former Vice President, Walter Mondale. Reagan has recently received a lot of praise for the relative strength of the U.S. economy and his successful defense programs. Mondale, on the other hand, has been promoting the ERA and the need to reduce the budget deficit. A key highlight of the Reagan campaign has been his use of the Bruce Springsteen song “Born in the U.S.A”, without asking permission, until Springsteen, a democrat, requested he stop. Mondale had been criticizing the President’s age, until Reagan turned this punch into a punch line when he said, “I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience.”
