This quote is from the novel “Rickshaw” by Lao She, it describes the struggles that many Chinese people faced during the early 1900’s. These issues of an unstructured government and the poverty and struggles many faced are also detailed in other articles such as “The True Story of Ah Q” by Lu Xun, in addition to “The Art of Living” and “ The Way Out” by Lin Yutung.” Many of these characters are in battles, some against society and some against themselves. The represent the people of china in the early 1900’s and some of the same exact difficulties. In the works by Lu Xun, Lao She and Lin Yutung, the author uses the characters to show struggle, in the current society and their struggles within themselves, and to emphasize why the Chinese culture needed a more organized political structure that helped the entire economy of both rich and poor families.
