Claudio Monteverdi
Born in Cremona of the year 1567, Monteverdi had the passion in studying music. He began studying music in his teen years to become a court musician. At the age 34, he was appointed to be maestro di capella in Cremona and remained in that position for eleven years.
For the remaining years of his life, Monteverdi was the maestro in the well-known basilica di San Marco in Venizia. He never stopped composing opera which he had started to do at the court of Mantova. Some musicologists argued that his “L’Orfeo” is the first opera in history, but the controversy is still being discussed today. There were other operas he wrote, but most of them were lost or are fragmented.
