When discussing the government and economy of China, the first thoughts that usually come to mind are those of communism and Mao’s great society. This is a misconception that many have in associating the modern Chinese society with that of the late 1950s. However, most people do not realize the great strides that China has made since the mid-seventies when Mao died and the power shifted. At first, the people tried to stick to Mao’s reforms, which called for a self-sufficient nation. They tried to accomplish this through his system of communes and cooperatives that called for people to group together in efforts to have an independent and separated nation. Mao wanted to eliminate outside influences so there really was not much outside trade that went on back then. He did not allow foreign countries to enter the Chinese market except for some rare cases where the country could not produce the items that they needed on their own.
