Alpha Cassiopeia is the name of the second brightest star in the constellation Cassiopeia. It has other names like Schedar, Shedar, Shadar, Schedir and Shedir all meaning “The Breast”. This star is brighter but cooler than our Sun.
Cassiopeia is a northern constellation. It is very close to Polaris. It is an “M” or “W” shaped constellation so it is easy to see it after finding Polaris. Its location can be better seen in the image on the right.
Cassiopeia was the wife of Cepheus who was the king of Ethiopia. She was a very beautiful woman but unfortunately her beauty caused her to be arrogant and vain. She believed that both she and her daughter Andromeda were more beautiful than the sea nymphs and she was not afraid to mention this out loud. This kind of arrogance brought her tragic end. Unfortunately, the sea nymphs were so angry that they complained about Cassiopeia to Poseidon and asked for a punishment. The punishment of Poseidon was pretty harsh. He sent his sea......
