A dialect is a variety of a language that is distinguished from other varieties of the same language by features of grammar, vocabulary, and its use by a group of speakers who are set off from others geographically or socially.

The Ancient Greeks had several different forms of dialects. The main dialects consisted of Attic-Ionic, Aeolic, Arcado-Cypriot, and West Greek. Attic-Ionic and Arcado-Cypriot are often classed together as East Greek. Aeolic serves as a median between East and West Greek.

For the Spartans, and militia Greeks, reading and writing wasn’t a necessary skill. For the Athens, literature was the main reason for schooling.
