Although making English the official language of the United States would have a large impact on non-English speaking citizens, it would also unite citizens under one official language. Making English the official language would encourage non-English speaking citizens to learn English in order to participate in American life. Immigrants would be expected to learn English in order to become citizens and to participate in our election process. As of now we have what is referred to as bilingual education in America. This means we are accommodating children in schools to learn in their native tongue. The goal of this program was to allow children to keep pace in some subjects while learning English. However, many students are not making the transition to English and instead are being isolated, some are even dropping out. This contributes to the large areas of poverty in our cities.
