Thomas Eakins was born in Philadelphia in the year 1844. Eakins was a photographer, painter, sculptor, and fine arts educator. Thomas Eakins had an interest in art since his childhood. Eakins attended Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1861. Eakins traveled to Paris in 1866 to study under the academic painter Jean-Leon Gerome. Thomas Eakins, however, was not extremely impressed by the European artwork and returned home about four years later. Thomas’ artwork started to mature in the years 1871 through 1874. Eakins’ first great pictures during these years showed rowers at the oars of racing sculls on the Schuylkill river. This river that Thomas depicts runs through his hometown of Philadelphia. His painting entitled Pushing for Rail, which he painted in 1874, shows hunters and boatmen showing their skill in the marshlands of the Delaware River.
