A patriarchal society is a system of social interaction that is dominated by a male figure, where the male has the authority in all matters. Patriarchal societies in the rural areas of nineteenth century Brazil affected all areas of society from the church down to slavery; men are the primaries of many establishments and all households. This was also the case in many matters regarding slavery, and within slavery itself. Men were often the authority figures that imposed and diffused situations such as that of the Caetana’s imposed marriage to the tailor slave Custodio.
