Introduction
For almost 30 years, tamoxifen has been the first-line endocrine therapy for the treatment of women with estrogen and/or progesterone receptor-positive (ER/PR+) breast cancer. Tamoxifen prevents estrogen, which serves as a stimulus for tumor growth in ER+ breast cancers, from binding to its receptor. It has been used in breast cancer prevention, adjuvant treatment, prevention of contralateral breast cancers, and the treatment of metastatic breast cancer (MBC) (1, 2). Tamoxifen has been shown to decrease recurrence and mortality rates, but may be associated with serious side effects. These side effects include increased risk of endometrial cancer (3) and blood clotting (4, 5). Although these side effects are rare, clinicians must be aware of these potential risks, and patient education of the risk:benefit ratio of tamoxifen, balancing potential toxicities with proven benefits, is required.
