A World History of Art aims to look at art from an exploratory perspective, intending to give its readers a chronological history of art from around the world. The introduction explains the art that lies within sculpting and building, further explaining the systems of building. Post-and-lintel architecture, two basic systems of building, was typically visible in ancient Egyptian, Greek and Chinese temples. Upgrades and new developments in the technology of constructing buildings were constant with the passing of time. Two basic techniques can be found within the art of sculpting, modeling and carving. Modeling depends upon building up clay, while carving depends upon the reducing of material being used; thus being given the name additive and subtractive processes. Many advances in technology were discovered, including instruments used to facilitate finishing of the marble, and the making of durable clay statues using a lost-wax process of casting.
