Henry Ford may not have coined the term “Flex Fuel Vehicle,” but he was the first to incorporate the concept. When Ford designed the very first Model T automobile, he built it to run on alcohol. Ford expected ethanol (a form of alcohol) would become a major automobile fuel. He told a reporter in 1910 that ethanol was “the fuel of the future” (Tvedten and Merriam). Could Ford have been more correct? With global carbon dioxide annul output approaching a staggering 32 billion tons, about 25 percent of that coming from the United States, policy makers, citizens, and investors are trying to turn off the carbon spigot (“Industry Overview”). While windmills, solar panels, and nuclear plants maybe part of the solution, ethanol is the real growth science. Although some experts say there are obstacles that need to be overcome, the positive benefits of ethanol will make this alternative fuel worth the time, investment, and effort.
