In this unit, the main problem was to figure out the length of a shadow (S) without having to measure it directly. We could use the following variables: the height of the light source (L), the distance between the light source and the object (D), and the height of the object itself (H). In other words, we were asked to find a formula that we could use to express (S) as a function of all the other variables or S=f(D,L,H). We then needed some background information about these variables and the nature of the problem so we learned about triangles; including their angles, side lengths, and other important properties.
The first thing we needed to learn about was what triangles had to do with the unit problem. This concept was very simple; when we drew out the diagram for the unit problem, we got:
