The Shaping and Critique of Brazilian Environmental Policy
Brazil’s performance regarding environmental issues during the 1970’s and 1980’s drew severe criticism from the international community. A survey of articles in the press, scholarly papers and books about environmental policies reveals that successive Brazilian Administrations are described at best as indifferent to the environmental degradation of the country, and what is worse is the administrations’ lack of motivation to reconcile economic growth with environmental conservatory efforts. It was not until the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in 1992 that conscious action by the Brazilian government was taken to amend decades of protectoral environmental neglect. Administrations in place post Rio have made concerted effort to work both nationally and internationally, with both public and private entities to develop a grouping of organizations that have placed focus on environmental......
