Nathaniel Hawthorne was an expert at including the use of symbolism and allegory in his short stories. In 1835 Hawthorne introduced “Young Goodman Brown”, a story that is filled to the brim with ‘hit-someone-over-the-head’ symbolism. The reader is introduced to Goodman Brown when he is leaving his wife Faith for a journey that is bound to change his perspective on his own religious faith. Throughout ‘Young Goodman Brown’; Hawthorne uses symbolism and allegory to further elaborate on the subject of ‘faith’.
