Young Goodman Brown: Watch out for that symbol!

In works of literature, the gold medal for complexity would be the ‘symbol’. This magical six-letter word morphs a story from blatant, concrete, and obvious, and turns it into a magnificent butterfly, one made of intricate layers, and rich in detail. Nathaniel Hawthorne was an expert at including the use of symbolism and allegory in his short stories. In 1835 Hawthorne introduced “Young Goodman Brown”, a story that is filled to the brim with ‘hit-someone-over-the-head’ symbolism. The reader is introduced to Goodman Brown when he is leaving his wife Faith for a journey that is bound to change his perspective on his own religious faith. Throughout ‘Young Goodman Brown’; Hawthorne uses symbolism and allegory to further elaborate on the subject of ‘faith’.
