Secondly, People were very pleased with the acquisition of the new lands in the Louisiana Purchase, which prompted people to move west, adding a sense of National pride. The united States Economy had never been better, the re were protective Tarrifs fro American manufacturing, and James Madison recommended a strong Navy and Army, and he got together another National Bank. The first national bank expired, so a new one was needed. The government improved roads, such as the National Road and transportation, like the Erie Canal for everyone. There was political harmony in the Election of 1816. The transition was smooth. Calhoun’s Bill failed when James Monroe said that it wasn’t constitutional to use federal money from bonuses to build roads.
