The human brain is an amazing and unique organ. Yet our fascination with it hasn’t been going on as long as you might think. Only around 100 years ago did we start looking into our most valuable asset and how it affects our behaviour and how we live. To find out about the human brain many techniques have been used. Some of the older techniques including Lobotomies and newer ones including Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRIs).
So what are these techniques and what do they do?
A lobotomy is a form of psychosurgery. It was one of the first techniques used but gladly it isn’t used today. When performing a lobotomy you sever connections and or completely destroy the prefrontal cortex. When lobotomies first came into use, it consisted of drilling a hole into the head and injecting alcohol to kill the cells.
