In the poem “after apple picking”, Robert Frost displays imagery of a man picking up apples after the great harvest. He uses this scene to represent something much more. To represent a man who has to much to do and not enough time left. In the poem, Frost employs a series of images to depict a man who has to much to do, unfinished business and is about to die.
In lines one and two Robert mentions a ladder poking through the tree and pointed towards heaven. This gives the impression of a pathway to heaven, and the man must gather all the apples or finish everything before he can climb any further towards heaven. The narrator says, “There’s a barrel that I didn’t fill Beside it, and there may be two or three apples I didn’t pick upon some bough” (1-2). These lines show there is still much work that needs to be done in his life. But it line 6 the man says he is done picking apples. It means he is at the end of his life now.
