The foreign domestic helpers’ momentary transformation of Central district has brought a good question to Hong Kong society of “do we need so many domestic helpers?”
From the history of domestic helpers, in the 1960s, only rich families had live-in domestic helpers. They mostly came from Mainland and they were women with special plaiting of their hair being called “spinsters”.(i) Since 1970s, there was a shift of hiring foreign domestic helpers from South-east Asian countries to Hong Kong, which was a result of growing economy and women’s participation in labor market. As more and more women were absorbed in job market outside homes and as more families needed double incomes in order to maintain a middle class standard of living, the demand for imported domestic helpers was unconfined......
