Ship Breaking Industry



The occupation of being a ship breaker is said to be one of the most dangerous in
the world. The profession in Bangladesh has seen 320 workers die and a further 600
suffer from injuries (Shyamol). Apart from accidents such as falling plates and
explosions, there are long term dangers such as cancer and problems in the nervous and
respiratory systems. There are more than forty thousand laborers in the Sosiya ship
breaking yard in Alang, India (Raj) and one of every four workers in the yard is expected
catch some form of cancer. The astonishing statistic is due to the high amount of asbestos
that workers are in contact with when breaking the ships (Kanthak and Jayaraman 6).

The number of accidents in the yards can be reduced with the help of preventative
measures, but the long term problems such as cancer must be prevented by the rich
