I walked into this exhibit with absolutely no expectations and no pretenses. All I knew was that there was an exhibit at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery and it’s subject matter was Hip Hop. Given the traditional and staid reputation of the Smithsonian and it’s institutions, I was quite curious about it’s portrayal of such an urban, contemporary art form. As I ascended the stairs to the museum and walked through the massive double doors, the last thing I expected to hear blasting from one of the corridors was “Made You Look” by Nas. Along with the bold graffiti (fabricated by Tim Conlon and Dave Hupp) adorning the walls, I had no trouble finding the exhibit entitled “Recognize! Hip Hip and Contemporary Portraiture.”
The exhibit began on a slow note for me in the first two rooms which featured the work of David Scheinbaum. His contribution to “Recognize!” was comprised of several black and white photographs of rappers and deejays during live......
