Farewell My Concubine is a movie that illustrated the lives of two men involved in Beijing opera. One played a female role and the other the man. The movie illustrates just how hard the life of a performer was and what it takes to become a master. In the movie the two main characters let a girl come between them and in the end tear them apart.
From the start of the movie when the two actors were kids to the end when they were performers they faced a life that completely revolved around opera. The movie emphasized the struggles and hardships that were involved with Beijing opera in the late 70s and early 80s. The children must dedicate themselves to the opera at a very young age and they were disciplined with forceful punishment when and it didn’t seem like they could have a life outside the opera. A good point in the movie that illustrates that point is when one of the boys when running out to get some crab apples and got beaten when he returned. The performers......
