There are ten species of duck found in Madagascar, three of which are completely endemic to Madagascar. All three of these birds are found no where else in the world and all three are facing extinction. Meller’s Duck, Madagascar Pochard, and the Madagascar Teal.
The Madagascar Pochard was recently rediscovered in 2003 after having been thought extinct since 1991. There were 13 seen in a single location, and there are thought to be other small pocket populations, the International Union for Conservation of nature (IUCN) lists the Pochard as critically endangered. There are now thought to be around 20 individuals left in the Lake Alaotra area, an area that has seen relatively low human interference because of the area’s inability to support rice cultivation. This bird is threatened from the rice industry as much of the surrounding area has been converted to rice patties and the lake has been irrigated in the flooding of these fields.
